The diocesan inquiry opened in Beirut in 2022. This page was checked on 5 November 2026.
What happened in 2022
The Jesuit Conference of European Provincials reported that Lebanese Bishop César Essayan opened the cause on 22 January 2022. It says an ecclesiastical tribunal would examine whether Kluiters died as a martyr under the Church’s definition. Opening a cause begins an investigation; it does not decide the outcome.
What this site does not claim
- We do not call him Blessed or Saint. We found no official beatification or canonization decree in the sources reviewed.
- We do not say the case has been transmitted to Rome or that a miracle has been approved; we found no accessible official record confirming either claim.
- We distinguish local Christian devotion and the word “martyr” used in remembrance from the Church judgment the cause is investigating.
What the terms mean
The Vatican Dicastery for the Causes of Saints explains that a diocesan bishop collects and instructs a cause under established procedures; later stages involve examination by the Dicastery. The title “Servant of God,” used by Jesuit sources after the cause began, is not equivalent to beatification.
