Villages of the northern Bekaa
Kluiters served a group of villages in the northern Bekaa, with Barqa central to his ministry. Jesuit sources describe a rural, underserved region affected by war and weak infrastructure. The village name appears in Latin spellings including Barqa and Barka; this site uses Barqa and the Arabic برقا to avoid confusion with other places of the same name.
Practical projects and shared work
Published accounts repeatedly refer to better access to farmland, water and irrigation projects, orchards, education and healthcare. Local accounts describe these efforts as collaborative, involving residents, sisters and supporting organizations. We therefore do not attribute every building or project to one person.
Jesuit retrospectives emphasize socio-pastoral work and reconciliation. A 2025 local history published by Nidaa Al Watan adds accounts of roads, water, orchards, schools, a dispensary and workshops. We identify those details as published local testimony, not as an independently audited project register.
Barqa Community Health Centre
The Lebanese Association of the Order of Malta says the centre was established in 1985 in memory of Father Nicolas. Its official centre listing says it operates in cooperation with the Sisters of Jesus and Mary. A 2026 Order of Malta report confirms a visit to the centre and its continued operation.

The official listing does not provide opening hours or a detailed list of services at this specific centre. Call before visiting; do not rely on this archive for emergency care.
The health centre was established after Father Nicolas’s death. This archive documents its connection to his memory; it does not describe him as its personal founder.
The village today
The Order of Malta lists Barqa as one of its community health centres in Lebanon. Published estimates of the number of surrounding villages served vary over time, so this site does not repeat a single figure as current without a current official source.
